The history of Nha Trang Ponagar Tower follows the legend of Cham people
Ponagar in the old language means mother. This temple was built to worship the Holy Mother Thien Y A Na. These are also traces of a powerful dynasty in the past and this architectural complex exists to this day. We know the name “Po Nagar Tower” as a generic name for this overall work. But in fact it is the name of the largest 23 meters high tower here.
Legend said Queen Po Ina Nagar or Ana Goddess is the goddess created by the sky and the sponge. She is the creator of the Earth, producing all things for life. Legend of the caregiver Queen Po Ina Nagar is also a god of prosperity, at first she worshiped the goddess without clothes. But when the Vietnamese took over, they gave the goddess dressed in Buddha style.
Nha Trang Ponagar tower in the mysterious legend of Vietnamese people
Once up on a time, a husband and wife of Dai An woodcutter went to a watermelon soup at night to see a little girl. They fell in love, so they brought it to feed. Later, the daughter felt sad, so she took the stone herself and the flower was about to become a painted mountain. Being scolded by her father, she incarnated into the song Ky Nam floating along the water. Khuc Ky Nam drifted to another village and was picked up by Prince Bac as a treasure.
One day, she found her and asked the king for her to be his wife. This girl is the goddess Thien Y Ana. Living together with 2 children, she remembered the countryside, so she took the child to the Ky Nam section to drift back to her hometown. Her adoptive parents died. The goddess Thien Y Ana lived here to teach people to settle down and fly to heaven.
The people here appreciated and built up the temple to worship the goddess Thien Y Ana (Ponagar tower). This is also the reason why there is often Ponagar Tower festival taking place on 23 March (lunar month) annually.
The famous architecture of Ponagar tower Nha Trang
Ponagar Cham Tower consists of 3 outstanding buildings arranged in order of low floor, middle floor and top floor.
- The lower floor is considered to be a gate tower. However; it is no longer nowadays. From here, there is a stone step leading up to the middle floor.
- The middle floor currently only remains the two main columns of octagonal bricks. The middle floor is arranged on each side 5 columns, more than 1 meter in diameter and 3 meters high. On the six sides, these columns are also designed with 12 small columns. Researching this structure is said to have been a temple in the past but was devastated over time.
- The top floor is a 23 m high tower built right in front of the main tower. This is the most beautiful and bulky project especially paid by visitors. People says that Ponagar tower Nha Trang is quite sacred and mysterious. Therefore; many people come here not only to visit and admire ancient architecture but also to pray what they wish.
